“World Breastfeeding Week 2017: South Africa can and must do more”
On the eve of World Breastfeeding Week, a call has been issued for all South Africans to do more to encourage and support mothers to breastfeed anywhere, anytime, anyhow. World Breastfeeding Week 2017 starts on Tuesday August 1, 2017.
The South African Civil Society for Women’s Adolescents’ and Children’s Health (SACSoWACH) says it salutes government efforts to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. “However, despite the phenomenal improvement in breastfeeding rates, South Africa still displays very low rates of exclusive breastfeeding at six months,” says Chantell Witten, Technical Lead for Nutrition for the Coalition.
”SACSoWACH calls upon all citizens and communities – the media, employers, families and society at large – to join hands, encourage and support mothers to breastfeed anywhere, anytime, anyhow. In the spirit of the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2017 – ‘Sustaining breastfeeding together’, let us co-operate to transform our beautiful South Africa into a breastfeeding country.”
